Ultrawide displays not rendering correctly

Nicholas Carroll shared this bug 5 years ago
Won't Fix

When running at 3440x1440 - Dual 4:3 in Fullscreen or Fullscreen Window, the bottom ~1/5 of the display is just a vertical smear. This doesn't happen at lower (non-native) resolutions in Fullscreen, Fullscreen window, or Window modes.

N.B. The next lowest resolution is not ultrawide (2560x1440)

Specs in brief:

Core i9-7900x @ 3.3 GHz, 64 GB, 2xGTX 1080 Ti SLI

Alienware AW3418DW gSync monitor @ 110 Hz

The rendering problem exists only on the main menu and loading screen. However, we don't offer full support for ultrawide and multimonitor resolutions. If it works for you that's great, but our engine doesn't correct for barrel distortion caused by high FOV and the HUD and other GUI elements will end up stretched in many cases.

4:3, 5:4, 16:9, and 16:10 are the only aspect ratios that we fully support.

followup: adjusting any of the Graphical options or toggling vsync does not seem to correct the problem, but upon creating a new world, it went away.

I may have jumped the gun on filing this bug, it might just be limited to the opening screen.

The game itself appears to be working great on an unsupported resolution. It's a curved monitor, so even after adjusting FOV up, the barrel distortion is not distracting. I think that if anything, it feels more realistic on a curved display. Thanks for the quick followup.

In my opinion 21:9 should be supported because ultrawide gaming monitors are becoming quite common today. Most of them have 2560x1080 or 3440x1440 resolutions that are not as much demanding as 4K displays and still much better than 1080p displays. Also 21:9 is the best aspect ratio for movies. Many people, including myself, prefer these 21:9 monitors instead of ultra-GPU demanding 4K displays.

4:3 and 5:4 aspect ratios are quite rare today, but 21:9 is not rare anymore.
