Leveling ground using wooden stakes

version 0.6.4.460D19

Since the update when using wooden stakes, rope and shovel, the ground does not level out properly. It leaves chuncks of ground missing and refuses dirt to be placed or taken away. This is happening in several online worlds and offline worlds. I have tried server different size plots and all have the same outcome. This has only started happening since the update!

Hello, thank you for the report. We know that leveling ground with wooden stakes can be hard. We still want to revisit this feature and improve it.

One thing that is good to do is to use Shift + RMB will add much more dirt. This way you will add enough dirt to fill the selected area. After that, you just dig or fill dirt without using Shift.

Excellent news to hear you're planning improvements with this, Keen. Based on the picture, I would continue to fill in those "puddles." In my experience, I've noticed that after you fill all the puddles, you're still left with large, low height wash-boards. But if after that, before removing the stakes, you dig with one scoop or two in a lot of the places and then refill you can end up with a much smoother surface.

This is something you can also do without the stakes. Digging a little after filling gives you a height that's somewhere in-between.

ive tried both these suggestions and neither work, i still end up with the big "puddles" of grey area. :(

@kamakazi , this is welshdoughnut - if you would like i can show you the leveling method i use and show others to use.

Main thing to remember is to keep everything close by as level as possible and remember dirt around edges need dirt as support.

Although my house is bugged you can still see in the bottom right corner what i mean by the support for dirt https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/958596195997784632/FA4B88513091BEA49E6BE3ED2EEB0A0057683D9D/

In my experience, fill the low spots first, then place the stakes, and cut the high spots off, the surface should level out between above and below white plane, then if you still have significant holes, call an admin to fix it.

Check out Rising World. They have the method down perfectly. Probably won't work due to differences in dev tools, but you should still have a look-see.

Hi

I want the plane to be higher up. Now I can't fill higher than this. (see screenshot below).

I think the plane should be where the stake intersects with the ground or block.

I found that the voxel "hands" work better for adding or subtracting terrain.

If you're in Survival, press Alt-F10 and check the box at the top. Hit ESC to close.

  • Press G and click on the voxel tab on the left side of the journal. Drag or right-click on the cube to place it on the toolbar. ESC to close.
  • The bracket keys ([ & ]) cycle through the various terrain textures.
  • Press F to open up the brush settings.
  • Click on Snap to voxel grid. Judging by your screenshot, you'll want to adjust the shape to something flat. Try 4 x .25 x 3.
  • Rotate the brush to where you want it. CTRL-Mouse Wheel to move it in or out. Fly Mode (X) also makes it easier. Once it's in place, left-click to add. Right-click subtracts the terrain.

The voxel tools make it easy to drill tunnels through mountains, create islands in the sky, carve out dry moats, modify existing terrain, create bridges, and other neat stuff. Use size and rotate (Q, E, R, Y) in varying combinations to create natural-looking formations.

Wait, using voxel tools in survival as a medieval master is actually possible now? Back in 0.6.x it wasn't.

Thank you Terry for your help, but I try not to use the creative mode tools when I'm in survival mode. I think that is cheating. :-)

I tried using the voxel hand tool and I still couldn't get flat ground. There seems to be something about the design of the game that it's not possible to create flat ground. As soon as you dig, that's it. The ground will never be flat again. Maybe I still just don't know that special technique that's necessary. I was still able to create a farm even with rolling lumpy ground, but sometimes it's pretty rough trying to move my farming cart across it. I need to learn how to make a boat and fish instead.

I'm going to post a suggestion on this. Maybe Keen can modify its code to make terrain conform to what the player wants.

I would suggest a new tool: Rake

The rake is often use for making land more flat on the area you are working with it.

https://www.wikihow.com/Level-Ground

"Spread the topsoil. Use a garden rake to spread the material evenly, checking using your level and a measuring tape to make sure it's staying level."

I personally gave up on the built-in landscaping stakes and whatnot long ago. Lucky one of my friends created a mod for leveling/grading terrain. It's based off the Rails Mod, so uses the rails terrain flattening ability but allows you to fill with soil, stone, sand and a variety of other textures. Check them out...

I have a similar problem but to a more severe extent. when filling in higher up in the staked out areas, the dirt formed these deep sharp grooves that won't level out.
