Infinite respawn and keeping the world, taking care of your avatar

I remember that when I played Zelda - if I only had one or two hearts left, I became much more focused and careful with my gameplay. The intensity made it essential that I improved my skill. I get that a little when I am low on oxygen or power or when my ship is burning with one to two good thrusters left.

A few questions I've asked myself about death in SE, and it depends on whether you play single player or multiplayer.

Should you care about your avatars life ?

What do you loose when the character dies ?

Should permadeath mean the end of the world for the last man standing?

Who are 'you' when you are re-spawned or cloned ?

Should re-spawn, as your character, have a cost ?

Should re-spawn mean you are no longer 'you' ?

Re-spawning or re-loading, is it cheating or reducing the pain factor ?

I suppose what I am really asking myself is, should I be satisfied with the current re-spawning system, or could there be some improvement that satisfies more?
