Is the area welder really the answer to the miserable experience of welding entire holograms?

While working on my first ship to fly to Vallation Station I have come across the issue that my personal single-block welder was unable to weld blocks inside my ship hologram unless I sit at a very specific angle, and I have to find that angle every time I want to weld the next block.

I figured I'd report it to the forums, to find a thread mentioning a similar issue, and a response from Community Support stating that issue had been fixed in 2.2. Checking out the changelog to see what had been done to alleviate the issue I only find mention of the area welder, nothing else.

Is this really the answer Keen has to welding entire holograms without issue? Because it makes the area feel like a band-aid solution to a problem that should have been addressed at the core: Welding whole holograms is miserable. You don't get to see the inside of your hologram, you don't get to see which blocks you can weld before you try to weld them, and targeting the inside of your hologram feels like open heart surgery.

I shouldn't have to build a completely new tool just to avoid an issue that is shouldn't even exist in the first place. SE1 had this solved perfectly, you got to see the whole hologram, but could target only weldable blocks. How is this not in SE2? Why did we need a whole new tool that is at best a band-aid fix to that problem?

I hope the team at Keen rethinks the Area Welder and welding as a whole because as it stands, building your first ship if you just happen to not have the area welder is horrible if you just happen to not find the materials required for the area welder.
