Information and communication logs

I was mining in the Nadirae system in the Nadirae Radine Reach because I was out of Magnesium at the time for building ammunition and missiles. Enjoying the missiles BTW! :-) Enemy ship go BOOM!

While I was mining, I just happened to catch a glimpse of a brief message in the upper right corner of the screen. It was something about species solidarity or some such, and it was gone before I could read more than a few words. I was between missions, so I wasn't sure what triggered the message. I can only think of three sources since we are not in multiplayer at this time:

  1. This was a message sent by a nearby ship or station
  2. This was a communication from the Colonization Authority
  3. This was a message announcement pushed out by Keen to get the attention of active players

When I went to go look for the message, I realized that there was no way to locate the message so I could re-read it at my leisure. I'm currently traveling back to Nadirae Station, so that would have been a way to pass the time.

This in turn made me realize that the game is missing in-game logs for game-related activities and messages. This might already be on your roadmap, but in case it isn't, there might be a few ways to handle this.

For contracts, there could be a mission log on the Contracts page while the mission is active. Any messages normally shown on the screen could be captured in the log so players can refer back to them.

For random communications from ships or the Colonization Authority, these could appear as a Communications log on the Character page. Inventory / Data Pads / Commuinications. Message events could record the location (if from a ship or antenna) and the contents of the message.

Game event messages could trigger the creation of new data pads that could also contain the contents of these messages, and the players can also refer back to those at their leisure.

While the last two seem to be related, I think their actual use in game is a bit different. Ship, station or Colonization Authority messages would likely go to the Communications log. Game event messages such as "Mystery communication from unrecognized station at X" which might trigger a special mission, contract or contract series or even an investigation of a point of interest would go to the data pads.

If blank data pads are going to be a player-created item in the future, then this could also encourage players to carry around a set of blanks to capture these messages.
