Planetary Exploration Mapping Block

It is useful to know where you have been on a planet.

A block with the abillity to record(reveal) the areas that you have visited on a planet.

This could be accessed to review a planet's terrain topography and features, but will only show the areas where the mapping block has previously visited.

The map could also detail recorded GPS marked locations on the planet.

I have asked for something similar before, but this is a limited mapping feature where planetary surface data already exists in the game files to draw the map from.

perhaps usefull to include it into a screen instead of a bloc.

This is true, but I am thinking that LCDs should have a function to access and display any setting(data value or set) for any block including armour. This would create a flexible approach where the map could put inside the cockpit on a LCD if desired. A display layout form would be necessary for data like the map and secondly an additional means to change the focus of the map.

This looks like something that could be done with 21st century tech. Putting it as standard equipment into each cockpit does not seem excessive. A new block is not needed, but the functionality would be nice to have.

I would like to display the map on any LCD, not restricting the map to a cockpit.

I would like this to be a block so it could be the source of the map for the LCD displays on the grid.

I also would like this to be a block so that it's knowledge is part of the vessel.

Where the block goes on a planet, the block would record the area it has visited.

As a block it, would not be automatically available, it would require materials and knowledge to construct.

Loosing the block would mean loosing the map.

I think copying(backup/sharing) the blocks map to another mapping block would be a good option too.

Thought question : Should it be necessary to have 1 block per planet on board or should 1 block be used to record all planets or moons ?

On second thought, I'd make it so that knowledge of the map is a property of the player. Like the auto-mapping functions of various RPG games like Morrowind. I guess that gives away how old I am...

The block could still be useful later in the development of the game, when we have reliable autonomous drones. Then the drone would store the map data it collects on its journey in the mapping block and only after its return, the player could access the block and add the data to their own map.

Either way, the map's extent should be limited what player or mapping block can reasonable perceive. The player has to have been there in a cockpit wit external view (a camera would count). The mapping block would need a camera to collect data.

Would be cool to be able to have some kind of hologram of the planet on a table for large ships with the area explored.

For smaller ships a screen would be used.
