Still need maglev and track

With the best will in the world, good engineering with the existing blocks in SE2 does not overcome some of the dreams of things beyond SE1 that could be in SE2.

A compact stable continuos maglev rail system is not easily engineered.

A system that can be used reliably on space ships whilst the vessel is changing direction, accelerating, or making rotational turns has to offer some rigidity in motion.


If a small craft has entered the landing bay of a larger vessel and I would like to park that small vessel into a numbered storage area on board whilst the main vessel is manoeuvring, it is almost impossible.

Any system that could enable this would need to be compact, stable and adaptable.


Pistons,rotors, hinges and wheels have their uses, but often do not result in a space saving system when used in combination.

A maglev system could help to achieve more promising results.

Nice video by the way, inspired this post. Wheels do not posses the delicacy of scale for bearing runners, maglav would be simpler.

im wondering if we could eventually get mag plates to "hold" their soft lock to metal surfaces the way connectors have soft lock before/after releasing the connection. it feels like a natural evolution of the system. the trick is to still keep it able to firm lock onto non metal surfaces like planets and asteroids.
