setting min/max distance piston does not work

Setting the min/max distance for pistons via timerblocks doesn´t seem to work.
I can successfully set a velocity to a piston with a timerblock (pos/neg) but my attemps to change it´s max or min distance have no effect. These values of the piston stay the same.

Also, fully extended or retracted pistons seem to accelerate the ship, if the pistons velocity is not reset to 0.
