What if you need to press SHIFT to ENABLE turbo mode, but once you pass 20m/s you no longer need to press or hold SHIFT to get that acceleration? That's a lot of work for that little pinky finger if you need to travel any great distance.
IF you disable dampeners in space, you currently don't have a limit at 20m/s and you can maneuver around as desired up to max speed.
the moment you enable dampeners, (or if you already have them on, and let go of SHIFT) you lose hundreds of m/s while you take a second to try to change your heading.

Also, if you get up to speed, but forgot to turn off the dampeners first, you have to lose a ton of speed to turn them off, then accelerate back up to speed, then you can cruise
Super dampeners will not disengage. Not through changing the setting in game, OR through a mod that tries to do it. That should tell you something. If a mod exists, to try to do something the base game claims to be able to do......
