Please make the new Event Controllers a 50cm³ block

Please could you consider making the new Event Controller in SE2 a 50x50x50cm block?


While the new design looks cool, it will arbitrarily make vanilla programming builds twice the size they need to be for no apparent reason other than aesthetics.

For the average player that rarely uses Event Controllers it probably won't make much of a difference.

But to experienced players that rely heavily on vanilla programming for small builds, this will severely impact the ability to create compact designs.

For example, the most basic control system I build for my vanilla mechs in SE1 uses 10 x Small Grid Event Controllers, occupying a 10 block space.

With an additional 3 x Timers, 2 x Lights and 1 x Rotor to trigger or be triggered by the Event Controllers.

The same system built in SE2 requires 20 blocks of space just for the Event Controllers with no added benefit beyond a few new conditions that can mostly be replicated through other means in SE1.

To effectively make a heavily automated build in SE2 you would basically have to build it out of Event Controllers, which is a point that Diggrok raised in his recent SE2 VTOL video...

This design choice also renders the SE1 Grid Importing Tool completely useless to anyone that has built an Event Controller on their grids because the two styles of Event Controllers won't be able to occupy the same space.


It is also a shame not to see more use being made of the 25cm grid system, particularly for the new Automation blocks as they could very easy be made in "circuit boards" and "server racks" at that scale.

As some one who regularly champions the Event Controller as their absolute favourite block in SE1, this choice for SE2 really disappoints me.

I am not the only engineer that feels this way. There are other tickets with similar problems but for different issues surrounding the size of these block...

Not to be a pain, I do agree with you, but 50x50x50cm and 50cm^3 are very, very, very different things. You should brobably correct your title.

YES!! I would actually love if these modules slotted in like the power cells. A master rack that I can slide in a timer, event controller, turret controller, etc. Like expansion cards of a PLC.

A 50cm block would have 4 racks. A 2.5m would have tons more.

We could then move the cards to other modules, or just rearrange as we program for those of us that like things in physical order.

I see a huge potential for RP and scenarios. Find a timer card to slot into an NPC station to activate certain automations for example

Speaking of PLCs, maybe we should just ask for an actual PLC block. 😄 Then we could use antennas for wireless communication between stations and build proper automation systems. Even the thought of it is exciting.

Or make use of datapads. Automation rules created with the Event Controller (EC) could be stored on a datapad as text (code) and later loaded back into another EC. This alone would already provide a great way to save, copy, and share automations.

You could also go much further with code than with a purely graphical interface. Advanced players might find it easier to edit the code directly, while regular players could continue using the EC's UI to create automations and simply use datapads to transfer rules between controllers. In other words, the EC could become the new Programmable Block: you either use a friendly UI for simple tasks or edit the datapad's code for more advanced automation. You could even start with the UI to automatically generate all the required block references and then continue editing the code manually.

It would also be nice to have a simple built-in code editor with syntax highlighting and error checking. Instead of using a real programming language like C#, it could use a game-specific automation scripting language. Yes, it would be more limited, but intentionally so. That way it could safely be allowed on vanilla servers, since players wouldn't be able to execute anything harmful.

At the same time, it would fit perfectly with the nature of the game, where complex automation often involves dedicated control rooms filled with multiple Event Controllers. In my opinion, this would offer the best of both worlds: the flexibility and convenience of coding, while remaining limited enough to become a gameplay mechanic rather than a programming exercise. Players would be challenged to invent clever automation systems instead of simply writing a few lines of general-purpose code.

Personally, I'd rather play a game than do regular programming. Such a system would also be far more accessible to non-programmers while still teaching many of the fundamental concepts of software engineering.

One additional component that would make this automation system truly powerful would be a simple data storage block capable of holding a single value. One automation rule could write a value into the storage block, while another could read it and use it anywhere in its logic. This would allow multiple automation rules to share a common state, making complex systems much easier to design while also enabling entirely new automation possibilities.

I like the idea with the datapad. But please with a "save to local drive" and a "load from local drive" function. That way I could store my codes offline and re-import them in a different game.

Indeed, compute blocks really don't need to be so enormous given how little they actually do. A much smaller form factor would be greatly appreciated.

They should just be replaced with "computers". And you'd typically need only 1 computer per grid, which could handle many different automations, and different types of automations. Then the size doesn't really matter that much. But they could be upgradable, and they could be gated for progression in that way. You start with a weak single core CPU and not that much memory. But you can't build upgrades yourself (as it is in real life), but have to buy more expensive components.
