O2/H2 Generator conveyor layout breaks majority of builds

We all know and love that the small grid O2/H2 generator is SE1 has a perfect conveyor layout to bridge from the OG cockpit to a large conveyor port, and I would say, at least from my experience, the overwhelming majority of BPs out there use this paradigm.

So bottom line, the new O2/H2 Generator's extremely limited single small conveyor port is not only extremely suffocating creativity wise as it is, it breaks pretty much every small grid BP out there. I appreciate you want a sexy new aesthetic for it with a nice front face for use in a station, but it's terrible for small ship design. Since the new cockpit is a large port for whatever reason, a large to large pass-through variant would be highly appreciated. Especially when trying to design a worm miner and keeping it slim, the O2H2 has to be bolted on somewhere like a cheek.

The more ships I build the more this issue stands out personally. On a station it makes sense for O2H2 to have a front end display, but for ships, every block needs more than one port so things can pass through it. As it stands now, the O2H2 is a butt end that breaks the chain anywhere you want to place it, which is pretty tuff if you're trying to build a slim ship.

Indeed, my current ship has one slapped on the back of it like I'm lugging a suitcase around on a roof rack.

i would like to see multiple variations of blocks like the o2h2 generator, being early on theres room to point out stuff like this, so variations can be considered.. though i do like the idea of a "front" access point as it is now, but it needs to come with full panel conveyor connections, not JUST split the way it currently is.

having that small conveyor connector is nice, but not at the expense of a full size connector... maybe having conveyor pannels able to be both large and small conveyors at each connection point might be a better option.


however, there is an argument to be had that "this block only wants ice in, hydro and oxy out." so it shouldnt be an integral connection point between systems. it perhaps needs to be part of design philosophy that its a standalone system not ment to be connected to anything but three things. ice storage, oxygen storage, hydrogen storage.

The situation is actually quite bad, I don't think many people, especially given how before VS2.3 we were practically given a ship, have spent much time building a ship, and now that I have, I certainly have some feedback.

None of the pieces want to go together.


Back | Left/Right | Top/Bottom

Reactor: S, L, L

O2H2: L, S, L

Smelter: L, L, S

Assembler: L, L, L


Typically, base or ship, one would put these side by side, especially since they all have a front facing human UI to them, yet looking at this basic list, nothing can go next to each other.

Maybe I need to make a separate thread, but here's my suggestion... For large grid (2.5m+) stuff, everything should be large ports, because if you ever want small ports in a large grid design, you should have a considerable amount of room to put the adapter in lieu of your first piece of straight pipe.


Failing that, I would at a minimum have left/right always large so that you can put everything along a wall together. The issue seems compounded in SE2 because of the nice esthetics of the blocks, you don't want to twist and turn them as much as we used to since they feel like they have a proper orientation. A sideways smelter with a vertical keyboard looks ridiculous.
