I've seen this topic brought up many times, by players themselves. There have already been suggestions, and there's even a thread in the archives that got nearly 200 votes. I've also suggested adding more variety to the animal world myself, but for some reason the developers keep turning a blind eye to it. And that thread that was marked as 'under review' is now in the archives, so I understand that there are probably no plans to expand the animal world anytime soon. But personally, I would really love to see it added.

Terrestrial animals, especially large mammals, should exist only on fully terraformed planets. "Domestic livestock" should exist only on inhabited planets. Transporting domestic livestock somewhere far out into space is more expensive and more difficult than transporting a human colonist there...
On newly terraformed planets, there could be insects, various worms, centipedes, spiders, crabs, and other similar small invertebrates, which are essential for soil formation and the life of higher plants and trees. At the same time, small invertebrates could exist in the ocean, followed later by smaller fish.
Large wild animals, large fish, and other sea creatures are the final stage of terraforming, once the lower levels of the ecosystem have developed sufficiently and have adequate biological productivity.
Although a giant crab or a giant spider (hello, sabreoid!) could be the plot of a story about a planet where terraforming went “a little more than just a little” awry and an unexpected mutation created a problem.
