Read/write item that can store either a single GPS location or a functional blocks settings.
They can be put in an inventory.
Blank data components can be manufactured.

Well, what are the possibilities ?

Can you imagine a navigation aid block with an inventory that accepted data components with GPS data.
The block would be able to use the contents of each data component to display map locations or to use for a drone path.
A data component with block setting data could be used by an event controller to reprogram an existing functional block, or a copy of the current settings of a functional block could be made by witting to a data component for latter use.

this feels like SE1s Datapads, just we can edit and set it somewhere.
create datapad, put it on drone, send drone to "near by" ally at another base on a one way trip" they get the info from the datapad. *potentially encrypted, so it cant be intercepted by pirates/enemy factions*
the use for this is crazy. conveyor systems across stupid lengths just for physical communication that cant be broadcast over the antenna..
hacking tools that allow for intercepting encrypted comms over radio, vs physical data that is harder to hack.
i can think of several reasons this could be useful. put a blueprint on a pad? no need to go through the workshop in game etc.
