SE2 Connnectors - No toggle connect?

It seems a connector requires "start aligning" command to connect rather than "connect" while it requires "disconnect" to disconnect rather than "stop aligning"?
There is also no toggle connect/disconnect, which is what I really want.
If we use 'P' then evidently, all connectors disconnect, so my attached ships wander into space when all I wanted to do was park and connect my connectors.
