Manufacture Power Module without making the whole battey block

When I would like to take some spare Power Modules with me I currently have to make the whole battery block, remove the modules and forget the battery, why?

I would like to make a Power Module either in the Gear Forge or the smelter please in addition to making the module when I make the battery.

There's like Power modules everywhere (atleast in survival mode with random unknown signals).

I have a small container filled with them...

manufacture power cells / modules separately, that's a good idea, i think. They also ought to be recyclable.


For the sake of depth imagine battery blocks have a bank of portable cells but also have at least some internal storage. This way a battery block will never have zero storage, and it can be cheap to build, but then we can invest further in cells (maybe of varying quality) to increase the power it can store or that we can carry on our person.


Imagine prototech power cells, would be like hunting for ZPM's in stargate universe


@beauchamp why do you think the .5m battery needs attention?

1. The power cell in the 0.5m battery looks too similar to the power module.

2. Batteries do not stack in inventory because of power differences, this leads to inventories looking confusing. Two sizes of cell/module makes the inventory view worse.


3. I would need to have two types of block for a charging station.

Like to circle this one back again. I'm starting to think that we should revisit the concept of 'battery'. The battery blocks have no built in power storage on their own, and really aren't a 'battery'. It's a power storage block I guess where you plug modular battery packs in (i.e. power modules).

What I'm thinking is that these power blocks should have their own internal power storage, which should come fully charged (which amounts to about half of the total power output of that block) with consumable power modules working exactly as they do now, but those slots are empty upon building the block, and those consumables built at the gearforge like other consumables (and non rechargable).

So you have the battery block that half of the power is rechargable and built into the battery block, plus the removable power modules that can be hot plugged to keep power topped off. I'm kind of torn on whether or not the power modules should themselves be rechargeable or disposable. One would keep my inventory from filling up with tons of extra power modules, the other would mean that I'd have to keep going to my battery and dumping more power modules in to keep peak power output. What a choice :P

If the battery block was a fuel cell and the power module contained Hydrogen Peroxide, how would that work out?

I can see where you're going, if it was a consumable item (the power modules or whatever) then it feels like there should be some automated way to have the consumables come out of storage. I can't imagine a huge ship with a dozen battery packs, four slots each where you have to go to your gearforge and make 48 power cells and then manually replace all the spent ones, or go find all the missing ones (assuming they vanish when consumed). The first time that happened, I'd probably geek out and say 'cool', by the third time, I'd probably be ready to crash that ship into an asteroid and go with some other power solution.

I do like the concept of a fuel cell as a different power block though. A PEM fuel cell with small cargo ports to pipe hydrogen and ovygen from tanks would be awesome. The output would be water, which could be harvested/saved and turned back into hydrogen and oxygen. Future tech you'd easily see 60% efficiency, so you'd still need another power source to re-crack the water over time. The PEM fuel cell would be about 2x more efficient than a straight hydrogen engine (pretty sure). Honestly, I'd dump the whole hydrogen engine cocnept in SE2 and go straight PEM for your hydrogen based power generation. Uses oxygen and hydrogen and spits water back at you.

I'd like to be able to build power modules in the gear forge. Makes sense.

For now I use exploits. I build batteries, take the power modules, and then scrap the batteries. I have power modules left over. Repeat as needed.

Random thought on this topic:

Two classes of power modules for these 'batteries'. (I hesitate to call them batteries since the battery block is just a plug0in station for the power modules which hold the power). One type is rechargeable, and the other type is a non-rechargeable power module that you can build in one of your stations like the gearforge. They are consumable and vanish when used. The consumable ones should be cheaper and easier to build, but obviously you have to keep making them to maintain power. The rechargeable ones more expensive to build but are reusable.

I'd almost say that I'd prefer that the newly built block have no power modules and you need to build them separately. However in either case, I'd also suggest (as above) that the 'battery block' itself have some internal rechargeable power storage, say 50% of the total capacity of each block. That comes charged when you build the battery block and then you can drop in the power modules (either rechargeable or the cheaper one-shot) to maintain a hot-swap power to gain the other 50% capacity.

(If you made it this far into the suggestion, the core reason for the suggestion was to bump the thread)
