Drill ship wont drill correctly

Solved

I've been having issues drilling through asteroids, so I decided to engineer a drill ship that should plow through an asteroid like butter. Screenshot attached. It appears that only 4 or 5 drills are allowed to drill at any one time. It also appears that something that the tip of the drills does not work, only at a slight angle. The smaller size drills seem to work faster and better than the large drills that I have on this ship.

I have to keep forward pressure and even then, the drills act like they are dull. They are extremely inefficient and require a non-flat surface to be able to drill the ore. The drill shop can only make a minor indentation before it becomes leveled, and the drill ship will no longer drill while at a 90-degree angle to the ore.

I do not know if the ships are limited to only 4 drills collecting ore at one time or some other issue exists where the tips do not cut into the ore, so the drills come in contact with the ore and cannot move forward.

These large drills are spaced as close together as a workaround for voxel material being missed between the drills when they are placed 1 full 2.5m block apart.

I've attached my blueprint folder here as will.

Trying drilling again with small drill, there is a problem with mining.

RMB digging is OK but mining through stone does not work.

Mining ore does not work properly too, I have to wiggle the drill around and change approach angle to get any resource gathering done.

I am using a 3 x 4 set of drills, I have checked for stray micro chunks of voxel and can not see any. If I am able cut into the ore deposit from a different angle I can excavate more ore, but then it stops again. I am prevented by this problem from mining deeper ores as I can not come in at a different angle unless I start excavating much more stone.

Tried pasting my mining ship into a fresh world in creative mode.

Same thing happens.

I have verified my files on steam

When using a single drilling block there does not appear to be a problem.

I think that the problem occurs when there is an array of drill blocks working together.

I got help on discord, and placed the drills only 0.5m apart and this looks like it is working.

When they were 1.5m apart it looked like everything was being cleared, but I guess that something that I could not see or drill away was being left behind to prevent me from drilling further.

I am only running medium graphics, but I thought that would be able to see if there was some voxel left behind.

My smallest possible miner ship is only 50cm taller than the drill (because of cockpit ofc) and yet I can barely fit into the hole I make when using terrain cleaning mode. When it comes to actually mine ore, you quickly become stuck in the voxels. Please increase mining radius for drills so small enough mining ships can easily fit into hole you make and rotate. Plus having at least gravity alignment on HUD would be VERY good to have.

The drill radius should be such that it should be possible to leave a gap between drills where you can see through from a cockpit placed behind the drills. As it is now, the drills have to so close to each other that the view is completely obstructed.

Hello Engineers,

I have reported this issue internally and added this thread to our internal ticket (SE2-30064).

Hello Engineers,

Large Drill is no longer getting stuck on voxels while mining. As such, I will close this thread.

Happy Engineering!

This is not fixed. Increase the drills more please

can not seem to make a ship that i can dock a bullfrog miner too, the ship goes through a crazy pendulum motion. so turned my ship into a miner. drills turn in both drill and dig but don't transfer any ore or in fact are not even seen in the inventory. can not access the inventory through the drills

Dave, this is a common issue due to the drills, welders, grinders having different connectors. The small drills must be mounted to a small conveyor port. The drills will automatically empty the instant the ship is connected to another grid if the drill ship's cargo containers are full.

This is not fixed!!! Please re-open this ticket and fix it properly.

Correct, they've never fixed this. You can only go in so far and then the drills will hit the ore at the same time. They cannot go forward as if they hit a brick wall. This happens more with large drills, probably because the drill heads are larger. The drills in SE2 seem to only grind at an angle. If you make a triangle out of the drills, largest in the center, then small (using a conveyor adapter), then large, etc. moving them back 1-2 blocks as required for them to fit next to each other then you can make an "A" shaped mining rig. You do need like 4-8 rows of conveyors and I found it best to mount the small drills on cargo containers due to the built in small connection port.

This allows you to drill in the forward direction a little, but then tilt your ship to the side a bit for the other drills to come in contact. If you press W you can mine even faster. You have to keep rocking the ship left and right and moving forward. Even then if more than one drill head hits ore at the tip at the same time then it will no longer go forward, but you can normally tilt until you get in so far your ship hits the asteroid/ground.

I put my cockpit and underneath it I put a line of conveyor tubes, about 8 blocks long. I then put rows of conveyors, enough so that I can add the drills and still have at least one row of conveyors left.

I don't think it's worth using the large drills due to this "feature" that we all call a bug. It takes a while to learn how to rock the ship and when to press W to drive it in deeper, often getting stuck trying to back out of the hole at the correct angle.

In my opinion most of the bugs that were fixed are now back in this VS.

I can't believe that Olivera is a starting station, with starting contracts, offering a whopping 1,000 to 3,000 credits... It takes a lot to keep wasting time traveling through space to complete these contracts and most are contracts from earlier sectors where the game paid 30K - 35K. The station itself is only design for small starting ships but has the most reactors that can recharge a large ion vessel. The store inside the station was never upgraded. It has the lowest number of items, all starting items and not much for credits.

It's only a matter of time before social media responds and people stop playing. There's absolutely no reason to play this VS with all of the bugs and then we get hit by Oblivara... the forgotten sector... where nobody wants to ever go to now.
