Conservation of matter.

This may be too much to ask for, but striving for this will give SE2 'game guts'.

What is 'game guts'?

It is my way of expressing the thing that makes you want to play and keep playing.

Do you mean whatever ores go into building a ship, should be fully reclaimable given the right recycling technology, regardless of how much damage the ship takes?

Too many things seem to magically disappear.

Engineering should not disappear.

Logical sense should not disappear.

Processes should cause problems.

Problems an engineer can solve.

In SE1 I could not fathom why all scrap was iron.

SE2 should be better than SE1.

It can not be better by being dumber.

Simplicity should be a guiding factor not a goal.

Complexity should become emergent from simplicity.

In answer to your question:

If the means to gather the debris from your vessels damage field is possible, then recycling all damaged material should be achievable.

The feasibility to do this can only be explored if there is a will to approximate the conservation of matter in game where ever possible.

Waste material and bi-products should remain as matter in game, and in turn would add gameplay.

Same the other way around: Matter should not appear out of thin air regardless of any bonuses in your devices.

For example, in SE1 if you had 4 yield modules in a refinery, then processing 1,000 kg of iron ore gave you 1,400 iron. Like what?? Refining is removing the other materials from the ore. The output is always less than you started with. Even if that 1 ton of iron ore was a pure 100% iron lump, it would still be 1,000 kg, never more...

Matter should not expand in the production chain.

The place where matter is created or destroyed has to relate to the observable and interactable fields. When exploring new areas, objects may be generated to add points of interest, equally when far away from a previously visited area it is necessary to remove objects from the world. This is a game thing, but my expectation of conserving matter is with observable rationale.
