Tutorial should guide to build a ship from scratch

In a game about building ships and stations, it feels odd that the tutorial just gives you one and makes no attempt at pushing you to build your own!

One of the earliest missions should make you build a ship, a rudimentary one. A simple checklist of what components are needed for a functional ship! Landing gear, cockpit, gyro, battery, atmo thruster in this and that direction...

This mission would fit to the very beginning. Build a simple atmospheric ship from scratch, in a guided manner.

Make it optional - if they dont want to build a ship, give a prebuilt one. If they build a ship, and dont like it, give a prebuilt one. But the tutorial needs to be there for those who are interested!

Tutorial can explain:

  • How thrust and gyros work in Space Engineers
  • What can be added to a ship optionally (cargo, power source, weapons, connectors, drills...)
  • General ship building tips
  • Difference between atmo/ion/hydrogen thrusters and their quirks

Tutorial can be split into easy steps:

  1. How toolbar works. How to add blocks and tools to toolbar.
  2. How to place a block. "Build bridge for rover to cross gap"
  3. How to rotate a block "Build a spotlight to illuminate dark cave"

Then give player a cockpit and one block at a time, explain what the block does, and have player place/build it.

Give prebuilt ships as examples, or if the player doesnt like their own ship, or if the player built ship doesnt work, there are backups.

And the same information should be available in text/image form in a Handbook.

The shipbuilding checklist could be further developed into something that goes beyond the tutorial - think a info screen that lists all the properties of the ship being built! Acceleration on each axis, turn speed, mass, everything!

I was going to submit this exact idea! Including the ship build mission as being optional for those who want to just play and not build much.

The tutorial should also teach how to set up and use mode.

I loved the hydrogen thruster room mission in the tutorial, more of these for the different systems, for players. A static display that you have to fix to make work is an interactive and visual learning experience. Way better than text walls. And a gps marker, so new players can go back and reference those displays, for future reference when they start designing their ship, or later on their first base, production chain, etc.
