I died and my game is done.

Unlike SP1 where if you die you can go back to a previous save ...
I died and even though I think I said, DO NOT SAVE, it saved it and unfortunately it respawned me in the Mining asteroid(which I made home base) without a ship.
The only save was the last save which wasn't the only time I had saved.
If that is by design, it really sucks.
Where are the Saves stored?
