Drilling bugged

I have a bug post as well, but I am trying to find out if other people are experiencing this in a similar way.
I have been working on a 5x5 drill array, it does not work. If I strip out 2 of the rows leaving drill space drill space drill, the drills will work, but I get a layer of stone where the gaps are. I have noticed that the drills do not go directly forward but are either being bumped up or down a little to progress. This leads me to think that there is some angular plane that the drill head will not remove when it is directly forward of the drill head. The drill head will slide over this plane until a different angular interaction occurs removing that problem plane.
I am in mining mode when this happens. Digging mode is OK.
