Backpack Building Balance Ideas
After playing for a good while and watching Splitsie video on the subject I thought Id make a ticket with the ideas written down on what could be done easily and simply right now to make feel better. The first one is making it production of components slower from playing around I have found around 5x slower is a pretty good mark for being still fast enough it not boring but also slow enough that it feels very early game and makes you want to quickly move to building a smelter to get faster production. The second idea is to make the components lighter then the ore used now for explanation sake for lore you could say it cause it gets rid of a lot the impurities in the ore and that why it lighter this way making the components in the smelter and using them to weld is not only quicker but also you can build more stuff at ones since you can carry around more components then ores.
For testing I made a mod that makes these changes to see how it could feel in the game - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3622354996

Good ideas! Backpack building should have some kind of disadvantage compared to the smelter otherwise the block is a bit redundant.

It is already inefficient by means of making plate takes more Iron, but I'm good if it's somewhat more inefficient.
Good Mod.
I honestly look at the current backpack and I shrug and go wait until you try and build a 50kPCU anything or a space station. You'll be blowing through Iron so fast it won't make sense, but if you make the plate, you can do it so much more efficiently.
When they get ship welders, you can put Ore in the tank and a smelter on board since it's small enough. Make whatever you need.
I voted for this. I don't think it's OP in its current iteration, and I'm fine with it being a little more inefficient at the very least by way of time to make and weld vs just welding (with the parts in the backpack).

Yeah, I watched Splitsie's video, and I agree, backpack crafting doesn't feel any less efficient, and juggling components feels less convenient than using raw ores. I only fired up Survival recently, so I don't know if it's actually less effective than using a refiner/assembler, yet.

With this they also should introduce the build planner. It’s very annoying running back and forth and individually picking the items to be smelted and then bringing them back in the correct order the item being welded needs them. It goes for raw ore too, I kinda wish the component being welded didnt have the component priority, just let me dump all the material I have in my inventory into the part being welded.
