Motion vectors of ship seem to be off from thrust vectors

Need More Information

While moving around Kemik, I noticed as I approached Kemik Station that the motion vector of the ship and the thrust vector of the engines seem to be mismatched. I had dampeners on to reduce the speed of the ship since I was approaching the station.

When I turned the ship using the arrow keys (gyroscope change), the motion vector for the ship appeared to change to approach the station rather than sliding by it. I was not pressing W,S,A,D,Q,E at the time, so I was not directing thrust motion for the ship.

Turning the ship using the gyroscopes shouldn't change the direction of thrust, only which engines are firing. In SE 1, that is what I would do to reduce speed quickly while turning on dampeners - use the gyros to change which engines were firing so the big engine was producing the most thrust.

I've noticed this as well. Mostly when holding W and thrusting in a direction at speed and then trying to course correct with directionals. If you allow all thrusters off for a moment (slowing down), and then trying to course correct, it works better, but still not the same feeling as SE1. Hopefully this will get ironed out in the future.

Hello Jeff Parker,

I could not reproduce this on current Game version: 2.0.2.51. The ship is not changing motion vector while Dampeners are ON and I am turning the ship with Gyros.

Could you please provide a video of the issue you are experiencing?

Kind Regards,

Video 1. SE2, ship does a full circle around the asteroid while decelerating with dampeners on. Only gyro steering/turning using the mouse. No thruster movement at all using the movement keys (WASD).

Video 2. SE1, same setup. Gyro steering/turning only while decelerating with dampeners on. No thruster movement at all. Ship just turns in place while automatically adjusting thruster output to reduce speed in the original direction of momentum.

edit 3 - Won't let me attach the SE2 videos for some reason... >_<

edit 4 - I think it worked this time!

I am testing version 2.0.2.57 using the Sledge.

I have been testing this with a steady thrust - no change in velocity - by flying very close to Vallation Station. The change in perspective appears to be an optical illusion due to the twisting of the ship. The center of rotation of the ship appears to keep a steady distance from the station.

However, when I approach the station at extreme velocity - a steady speed over 500km/h - and then simply hit the Z key to turn on the dampeners and then turn the Sledge, the ship slingshots around behind the station in an arc. In the end, you can see the ship sliding sideways in relation to the station.

Maybe this is due to the sledge's design, but I would have expected the direction of thrust of the engines to be counter to the direction of motion. I wasn't pressing any other keys than the arrow keys to rotate the ship after turning on the dampeners.

I would have expected a slingshot like that if I was applying thrust as I turned the ship. But that is not what is happening.

Both videos show the slingshot maneuver, so I am able to replicate this maneuver.
