This issue began in 2.0.2.26 - prior to that version, I only encountered instant crashes to desktop.
I reach the cave behind the atmospheric ship at the beginning of the survival mode story, pull out the drill, and begin carving out a larger entrance. My graphics driver hangs within seconds - it appears to trip Windows timeout detection and recovery after a few seconds, though it doesn't always manage to recover the driver, necessitating a manual restart of my PC.

For quick reference, I'm running on a Ryzen 5 3600 w/ 32GB RAM, and a Radeon RX 6800 - overall just below the listed recommended spec. Crashes aside, performance is good.
