Flight instrument for indicating proximity to planetary gravitational field

As above.

When circumventing from one side of a planet to another it is fuel efficient to do this outside of the planetary gravitational field, but not to far away.

As the boundary of the gravitational field is invisible it would be useful to have a flight instrument that can tell me how close I am to being inside the planets gravity.

The gravity indicator will tell me how strong the gravity is when I am in it, but does not give me a distance to where the gravity starts.

If there was such a device in the future then I would like to use that data point to feed into the logic of an auto pilot for following the planetary curvature.
