Keybinds for Changing Block Size and Variants

Please bring back or give us an option to change the keybinds for cycling through the block sizes and variants separately. I cannot stand hitting R over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over just to cycle through armor block variants and sizes. The scroll wheel method in SE1 was perfect. Just needs a little refining for the unified grid system.

I would like to have an option to use...

  • ScrollUp/ScrollDown to change block variant
  • SHIFT + ScrollUp/ScrollDown to change block size

And I would like to be able to disable the scroll wheel from changing my selection on the toolbar. I hate that. Abso-bally-lutely 100% hate that. I hate it in mmo's. I hate it in any games. I hate it in SE2. I aboslutely do not want to use the scroll wheel to change my toolbar selection.

Yes, I have tried using Space Editor to make these changes myself, but limitations prevent me from being able to use the scroll wheel for changing block size/variants since changing/removing the toolbar adjacent keybind does not work.

I agree with the previous speaker.

What really bothers me in Space Engineers 2 is the way blocks are rotated and placed. It’s not intuitive at all. I would really prefer the system from Space Engineers 1. I’ve played over 1000 hours of SE1, and building objects was incredibly fast and straightforward.

In Space Engineers 2, however, the process is overly complicated — there are too many keys to press, and it just doesn’t feel intuitive. It would be great to bring back the old system or at least give players the option to switch to the classic controls.

You can edit them using Keen's Space Editor on their website, just in case you didn't know about that option.

Everything the OP said. The current system is just awful - SE1, perfect.

I read somewhere that customizable keybinds will be coming soon, in vertical slice 2.2 or so IIRC.

About block rotation, maybe you found the controls to be intuitive in SE1 but I for one keep struggling even after hundreds of hours. Hinges, in particular, tend to never go the same way twice but rotate all over the place and I can never tell which side is positive and negative until I get it to move. I can change this apparent randomness to another equally random but somehow different scheme using T, which makes them still never go the same way twice. Add to this the fact that there are two ways to rotate blocks; using the Ins/Del family of keys, or with Ctrl+WASD. Both seem to change depending on the direction the player is looking, but never in a way I can accurately predict.

SE2 changes all of this by letting you again rotate with Ctrl+WASD, and still the blocks seem to rotate whichever way they feel like.

In Keen's defense, it has to be said that this seems to be an unsolved problem with most games where you rotate and place blocks. Maybe rather than drawing that useless plane, they could instead show direction hints (what key for each direction) when you hold down Ctrl? Make it possible to turn off this overlay for the purists, that should make everyone happy.

The scroll-wheel is wasted on the toolbar slots anyway. Being numbered 1-9 already, if I need to select the block in slot 5, I can just hit the 5 button. Done. Easy!

The scroll-wheel would be of far more use cycling through blocks as is currently the method in SE1. And a hell of a lot easier than bashing at the R key.

I honestly think something like a radial menu would work better. Less key binds and can be opened with one button. This topic delves into it more https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers2/pc/topic/45732-radial-menu-for-block-size-variants
