Auto-Select Best Tool

Problem: When you die and respawn, if you have an upgraded tool, you need to either re-equip it, get a new one, or replace the tool in your hotbar with the basic version. This can be very annoying.

Solution: I propose an option to place an “auto-best” tool in your hotbar instead. When it is in your hotbar, selecting it will automatically equip your highest-level tool of that type.

You can still put the various levels of tools in your hotbar as usual. This would simply add an additional placeholder option that pulls out the best one from your inventory. With this system, when you die with a high-level tool in your hotbar, you won’t have to manually change your hotbar in the G menu to use a lower-level tool. Similarly, if you obtain a better tool, you won’t need to re-enter the G menu to switch—it will happen automatically.

Example: If I have a T1 welder and a T3 welder. If I select the auto-welder, it will give me the T3 because it is the highest level welder within my inventory.

Alternatively or in addition to this, the repeated selection of the same tool in hotbar could cycle through tiers and auto-select

I concur with your thoughts, but believe that the tool vs block placement toolbar system could do with a bigger overhaul.

May be the new projection building system will eliminate some of the issues I have with the constant swapping between tools and blocks.

It would be nice, but it will also require either a way to override it if tools remain as they are in SE1. Lots of players rely on the lowest tier of grinder to finish hacking prototech or other things that can't easily be replaced. Alternatively a setting could be added (right-click on the grinder?) that stops the tool function at a set point such as disabled/hacked.

My solutions are either allow you to cycle between the tiers the same way you change block size in SE1 (just add a tier called "auto" which selects the best) or as mentioned in my original post, you can put the low tier grinder into your toolbar just like you can now. This would only add a dummy tool to select, not remove any tools.
