[POTENTIAL FUNCTIONAL BLOCK IDEA] Railways
Not Enough Votes
Blocks:
- Rail wheel; locomotion type that is magnetically attracted to rail blocks and when unpowered, has no forwards/backwards friction, and very high lateral friction. It would have vastly more power compared to standard wheels at the expense of no suspension function and very poor handling off of tracks. when braking could potentially have a steam effect like air brakes
- Rail; a beam-like block that has a single attachment point and attracts rail wheels to it to prevent derailment. it cannot be damaged by parent grids with rail wheels, nor can it damage them. It would have 2 variants: wide with 2 tracks embedded into a flat beam for attachment points, good for surface infrastructure, and thin with a single, undecorated track, good for monorails and potentially even traversal within large enough vehicles and space stations. if the engine would allow it, potentially even having curved rails by leveraging the new grid system and more powerful engine to make large, gradual turns.
- Possible Rail system where grids with rail wheels are "bound" to a targeted rail to ensure smooth, scheduled running, like a massive, composite sub-grid, able to set up logistics systems with birds-eye-view oversight

Utility:
- Long range transport for stations between locations for anything too long for pipelines and too short for dedicated hauling craft, would streamline colonisation logistics considerably, especially when starting out.
- Combination with AI navigation such as autopilot and sub-gridding such as hinges, docking ports and rotors to allow for more complex automated transit via self-driving trains, allowing for easy, highly scale-able bulk transport that is sure to please a very, very large slice of the userbase. Easy transport of People, resources, whole vehicles and even buildings, and even fluids with the right combination of blocks and know-how
- Encourage more dynamic builds and even more dynamic encounter structures, as traversal is made more interesting with the use of potential vehicles like lateral elevators, monorails, funiculars and even outright freight trains, inspiring engineers both in their own builds and in the scenarios they design. If train builders in SE1 were able to build so much with just wheels and normal armor blocks, imagine what they can do with tracks that finally do not require 192 rotors and very precise armor deformation just to curve, or rails that require a welder array to not damage either cart or track.
Drawbacks: - might be hard to code or something IDK
