Doppler Effect and Sonic Booms

I think adding sound effects like the Doppler effect or sonic booms could make the planetary experience in SE2 much more immersive and cool. It wouldn't be too hard to implement, but the payoff would be huge. Imagine doing your duties at the base and hearing the sound of a spaceship flying past you, or the distant crack of a sonic boom. You could then jump in your interceptor to investigate or prepare air defenses if you know it's an enemy ship

I think the Doppler sound effect can be approximately achieved by sweeping a parametric EQ across a noise source with an amplitude fade according to distance. A sonic boom's sound character will relate to size of the craft producing it and the position of the observer relative to the procedure of the tail of the compression cone.


Note that higher frequencies tend to be absorbed by the surroundings more readily than low frequencies. The approaching sound is often short and loud, whereas the decaying sound will persist and fall in tone for a while. Echoes of the lower tones will reflect off of hill sides adding to the mix and may precede the craft when sub-sonic .

The reality is that this would normally need an atmosphere, only game magic would allow for it in space or on a planet/ moon with no air.

Sound underwater is another story, as the speed of sound in water is much faster.
