Hidden map layer on planets for route/road use by bot rovers

It is possible to create a maze map of best routes in a given area of terrain topology through the use of GIS software. This could take incline, obstacle and through destinations into account. The map could be pre baked for the planet. A rover with an automaton controller could take advantage of this map to avoid getting into trouble and use a road route finder along the invisible map to achieve destination. Some short cuts may be allowed and a route be damned mode for angry bots. User created changes to the terrain could be compared to the map and treated as a standard obstacle.
Open flat areas may require a simplified approach.
