When it comes to combat on foot sometimes it is good to have a shield.

A little protection can make that ground assault less of a re-spawn fest.

I do not think that this one will fit into a backpack.

Many a time, I have tried to sneak up to an NPC base. Steadily moving forward by placing unfinished armour blocks in front of a turrets line of sight, and occasionally having to rapidly dig a pit for some cover, wondering do I make a run for it or wait until the turret looks away. I have often thought that I could do with a shield right now. I could of course jet in and slam myself into a wall again.

A personal shield as a "tool" or as a "small wall of armored blocks" held "in the hand" is the least crazy idea of all the shields proposed so far.

Hmmm... I could see a shield-tool protecting someone from interior turret fire, but if I recall the gatling turret is supposed to fire 25mm rounds. Such projectiles are unlikely to notice a man-portable impedance...

That said I'd rather avoid encouraging grinder-monkeys if it can be helped, getting all your stuff stolen/wrecked by someone that abuses infinite respawns to effectively risk nothing isn't great for player moral.
