Visual sense of movement in space

In SE1 there is a particle effect to show that your vessel or character is in motion in space.

I have not noticed this in SE2, thought it may be may result of an old GPU or the wrong settings.

I know that some people do not like particle effects for movement in space as it detracts from realism, but the particles are useful. I do not always get a sense of scale when looking at asteroids and would like to know if I am approaching them too fast.

Would it be possible to either have the movement particles in SE2 and/or have something in the cockpit or on the visor, that could be switched on or off, to show movement in a graphical manner?

Some games have a cockpit display or an overlay with grid lines that pass by. If they were near transparent on an overlay that might not be too distracting, but still useful. A few particles would probably be less processing than a HUD function.

The particle motion effect is probably one of the most jarring graphical effects in SE1.

Similar to the "motion" sound effect...

Right behind them are dirty windows and cameras

I am not ashamed to admit that I have walked into windows on board.

Do you have suggestions for alternatives?

option to turn off pointless graphic and sound effects...

And a properly done user "pilot" and "navigation" interface with meaningful information.

In your opinion what features of the navigation interface require improvement or need to be added beyond those in SE1 for SE2?

How much of the interface should be built into the cockpit/visor displays vs the HUD?
