Advanced Paint Gun Modes and Enhanced Block Customization Options

In Space Engineers 2, the paint gun currently allows players to recolor only the main surface of a block. However, many blocks include additional visual elements such as warning stripes, yellow outlines around conveyor ports, decals, and other default-colored details that cannot be recolored. This limitation can sometimes disrupt a ship’s visual design, especially when creating builds with unique or faction-specific color schemes.

I would like to propose the addition of multiple paint modes for the paint gun. For example:

  • Primary Mode: paints the main surface of the block (as it currently works).
  • Detail Mode(s): allows the player to paint secondary elements such as: warning stripes, port outlines (e.g., conveyor access rings), decals or warning labels, default-colored parts that are currently unpaintable (e.g., dark/black segments).

As someone who has experimented with modding, I understand this may be technically challenging — especially with regard to LOD implementation — but adding this feature would enable full block customization and significantly enhance immersion and visual variety. It would allow each faction, theme, or design style to truly stand out with consistent color usage.

Additionally, I’d love to see the return of customizable LCD screens on functional blocks, terminals, and cockpits — similar to Space Engineers 1. This would allow for better in-game interfaces, immersive control panels, and creative ship interiors.

Lastly, I suggest adding the ability to customize the emissive light color of blocks depending on their state (e.g., powered on, powered off, damaged). This could work similarly to how lights can be color-adjusted. Such a feature would provide clear visual feedback and open up even more design possibilities — for example, red lights for military ships, green for industrial, or blue for civilian vessels.

I realize these features would likely require updates to the rendering system and possibly significant changes to existing blocks. However, they would be highly valuable additions for builders, modders, and roleplayers alike. I truly believe many players would make full use of these customization options to make their creations more immersive, functional, and aesthetically distinct.
