Essential Features for SE2 Must-Have Improvements
Hey Space Engineers,
I've been playing Space Engineers 1 for over 602 hours, and I know exactly what works, what doesn’t, and what needs improvement. With SE2 still in its early stages, I want to highlight three critical features that would significantly improve gameplay, immersion, and creativity.
1 NATIVE MECHANICS FOR CRANES & OVERHEAD LIFTS
Right now, players have to improvise cranes, lifts, and rail systems using pistons, rotors, and wheels – and we all know how unstable that can be. A simple piston-based lift can easily glitch, explode, or behave unpredictably.
🔹 Solution: Introduce a modular rail system for smoother, more stable movement.
✅ Rail blocks – tracks for moving structures.
✅ MagLev-style transport – magnetic suspension for better control.
✅ Dedicated lift/crane blocks – extendable arms, hooks, and automation-friendly parts.
✅ Better conveyor interaction – easier automated cargo transport inside ships/stations.
🎯 Why is this important?
It allows for realistic shipyards, cargo handling, and repair bays.
Removes frustrating instability when trying to make functional elevators or gantry cranes.
2 USER-FRIENDLY SCRIPTING TUTORIAL & IMPROVED PROGRAMMABLE BLOCK
The scripting system in SE is extremely powerful but not beginner-friendly. Many players avoid it because it lacks guidance and an intuitive interface.
🔹 Solution: A built-in tutorial and a better code editor.
✅ Guided scripting tutorial – step-by-step learning, e.g., "How to automate a mining drone."
✅ Pre-built script templates – basic automation blueprints like auto-doors, turret AI, or drone nav.
✅ Improved in-game editor – syntax highlighting, autocomplete, debugging tools.
✅ More API access – let scripts control live LCD camera feeds (see point 3!), diagnostics, and AI.
🎯 Why is this important?
Encourages advanced automation without forcing players to search for third-party guides.
Makes programmable blocks accessible, boosting creative possibilities.
3 LIVE VIDEO FEED ON LCD SCREENS
SE lacks one crucial immersion feature – real-time camera feeds on LCDs. Imagine a spaceship bridge where you can monitor security cams, docking bays, or external views in real-time.
🔹 Solution: Implement a live video system for LCD screens.
✅ Connect cameras to LCDs – real-time ship surveillance & monitoring.
✅ Multi-camera displays – split-screen monitoring for security stations.
✅ Programmable API support – allow scripts to create advanced HUDs & interactive displays.
✅ Live ship status screens – fuel, power, damage, or radar visualization.
🎯 Why is this important?
Massively increases ship immersion, making bridges and control rooms feel like real starships.
Enables better automation and security systems.
Boosts creative gameplay, allowing for smart HUDs, drone monitoring, and base management.
Final Thoughts – Why These Features Matter for SE2?
✅ They would bridge the gap between SE1 and SE2, making the new game feel truly next-gen.
✅ They improve gameplay mechanics, immersion, and player creativity.
✅ They eliminate frustrating workarounds, like glitchy piston elevators.
✅ They align with what the SE1 community has been asking for for years.
I've spent over 602 hours in SE1, so I know exactly what works and what’s missing.
These features would not only improve SE2 but make it the ultimate space engineering sim.
🔥 Keen Software House, if you're listening – these changes would make SE2 a true masterpiece! 🔥
