enhanced jump drives and types
the premise is to diversify methods of faster travel with different drives with different functionality.
the problem in the original game is that the jump drive is very permissive and easy to just store deep inside a ship, and really its just a brick that teleports a ship, we would like to avoid this so i propose 4 different types to help diversify peoples options.
gates: these are made of really heavy parts in a closed loop that forms a sort of slipspace slingshot that consumes power based on range and weight of the object passing through, this does not provide instant travel but it will give a ship without a drive enough "slipspace momentum" to drop out a specified range from the gate, note the gate CAN NOT launch itself so it must either be moved via tug or its own thrusters to a new location if not disassembled, this device provides a one way trip due to its nature and its occupants cant be tracked even if the path is close to a enemy. (a effect like halo ships with the big hole opening)
frameshift drive: this device is also heavy but its downside is its more bulky and will charge if it doesnt have the massive amount of power to maintain itself during the trip which will take time which isnt the best if its trying to run from combat, the early variants require a large exposed ring to generate the warp field whilst a more expensive/ late game variant may have smaller parts that still need to be on the outside of the ship. these drives are quiet when engaging and they are somewhat slower and can be detected whilst traveling. (think elite dangerous) they do have the unique ability (provided the energy to sustain them) to just engage and steer whilst operating to allow changing course, running out of power for any reason will cause a somewhat violent drop out to normal speeds, the drive also disengages automatically within range of planets.
shock drive: these drives are the fastest ship mounted drives and they offer protection/ are undetectable when traveling, they are VERY loud however and will be easy to notice when they leave or arrive, they can be mounted completely inside a ship but they are long and heavy so their location should be considered. (think dead space warp drive)
slipspace drive: a very large, very heavy and very power hungry drive reserved for large capital ships that operates kinda like a gate or slipspace drive from halo, it punches a hole in spacetime for ships within a radius of the capital ship to go through, like the others this isnt instant but it is better than running a bunch of separate drives, its big, its loud, people are definitely going to notice one of these running. the big difference from the frameshift drive is its only able to charge for whatever location/distance it was set to.
