Solar system

In Space engineers 1 the sun is just a part of skybox. It's easy to forget but sometimes it's annoying.

But I really really hope that the sun is real object in Space engineers 2. That could make so many interesting things possible. We could fly around the sun and take damage if going too close. Sun could send solar flares from it's direction. Not aiming to players but random direction like in real world. Solar wind could have some gas to collect. (mostly protons and some helium) Radiation could be dangerous and fun challenge.

I'm not sure how hard it is to put planets to rotate but I hope it's not too hard.

Yes Come on guys is this 2025 or the early 2000s. A proper dynamic solar system should be a given at this point, meaning Planets rotating and orbiting the main star. Yes Stars are at the center of solar systems not orbiting around it.

Sun was real object in Elite 1984 :)

A cool idea, but moving a planet's worth of voxel is a lot of work. If I have to choose between either playing with a sky-box sun or needing to raid a secret government facility for a computer powerful enough to play, then I'm good with the skybox sun.

It wouldn't be so hard if the SE universe were similar to the real universe - i.e. almost empty. But in a literally crowded SE universe, that's a problem.

In a "emptier" universe, there would also be the possibility of hierarchically dividing space into "cells" and "switching" coordinate systems between "local cells" with objects like planets and asteroids, and a global system with the Sun as an object.

Simply, if the player is close enough to an object that they can interact (even if only by close observation), voxel mechanics are used, if they are too far away, simplification of the display mechanisms kicks in, through LOD levels to the level of "dynamic sprites on skyboxes"

The environment would behave similarly - the environment only changes with distance from the Sun/central star in a system where the Sun is the object (the highest level of the hierarchy). In a local planetary system, the cosmic environment is homogeneous, influenced at most by the eclipse of the sun by a planet.

Similarly with solar flares - they have a random direction in the solar system, and if they hit the location of a local cell, they trigger an event in that cell.

Hi!

I believe there is a mod in SE 1 called "Proper Solar System with Asteroid Belt, Trojans". I have a save with it and its so immersive ! I hope in SE 2 we will have that aswell. But it would be nicer if it would be in the base game :)
