HDR support

I have an HDR monitor, so right now I see ugly blooms around lights in dark areas as it's locked to SDR on a monitor that can support a HDR. I tried a third-party software to add HDR but it just crashes the game.

Please add HDR support!

If you have a NVidia graphics card you could try NVidias own RTX HDR feature which also does a SDR to HDR conversion. But indeed, native HDR support would be great. Especially space games have a huge advantage from HDR because of the extreme contrast and the skybox is already a 32bit texture. So maybe HDR is already planed for later but held back to reduce the amount of possible bugs.

At some games it is also important to activate HDR before you start the game.

My card is AMD, so that is not an option for me unfortunately. And the software I tried (Special-K) launches the app through it, so it should already be turning it on before starting. But unfortunately it just crashes instantly :(

I vote for this too. I've managed to get things to look ok by using the NVidia driver overrides, but it would be better to have the option in the menu and have it actually configured for HDR. Right now, I think it's just SDR mapping so while it looks good, it's not how good it could look.

With Keen working on making this game look superior to SE1, HDR would be a good option for those of us with capable monitors.

@Star_Kindler: Hm, yeah, that is bad, ReShade also didn't work with SE2 nor does it with SE1. It seems the VRage

engine is generally not compatible with such tools, sadly.

I had my last AMD card over a decade ago, so no clue at all about the AMD driver software.

SDR -> HDR isn't a substitute for HDR; it's like upscaling in that it has to make stuff up.

I'm reasonably sure you don't need a bloom filter if you have HDR, as you can have a bright light instead of having to spread the brightness to surrounding pixels to represent a bright light.

I think that it's worth to say that real native HDR is equivalent or better upgrade than raytracing in some cases, and it doesn't cost any performance. Please people don't compare native HDR to some reshade trickery or RTX HDR those aren't remotely comparable. The in-game native HDR implementation should have UI, paperwhite, peak brightness control. And ideally we would get support for using HDR colors for modding or base game stuff like thruster color etc.

Yep, good native HDR support is always much better as any SDR to HDR conversion, even when the last is better than nothing, because SDR on a HDR (on) monitor looks always bad. But from the voting count so far we shouldn't expect it that soon if it is not already on their list.
