Painting on one side of a block ( Leaving the other faces untouched )
One thing that has always bugged me about Space Engineers 1 has always been the rigid way which you are able to paint in the game. I feel as though there should be a way to paint one side of a block meanwhile the other 5 [Or how many other] remaining faces stay unchanged. Oftentimes I find my self needing to redesign entire parts of a ship due to an opposing color combination used in the interior and exterior of the ship.
As for functional blocks I don't really feel like those have to be touched as those are never really used to the extent of something like armor plating or paneling.
For full transparency: I have not got the game yet, however I am planning to sometime this month.
I however, feel that this is a good change and as I cannot speak for the rest of the community I will say that as a builder I really would love this feature.
However this is not a game changing mechanic so I would understand if this idea were dismissed. Although it would scratch a big itch I have had for quite a while
On the one hand, I don't think this would work on a per-face basis. Think about cylindrical shapes, or filleted blocks - what face does that fillet or round-over count as? is the line of demarcation half way through the fillet or does the filleted edge "join" two faces?
That being said, what I *would* love to see is different paintable regions. Take the Wall tile for example, there's the primary paintable region as it exists now, but there's also the black "inset" area that is currently unpaintable. What if that were separately paintable?
At present, I think there are only provisions for one paint mask per texture from what I've been able to gather, but might as well throw the idea out there.

Yeah, it is a big issue. Sure, you can avoid it more in SE2 thanks to the new grid system, but that means you need to split blocks in smaller blocks so you can paint the block on one side and leave the other on the other side untouched. But that is nothing that is good for performance and PCU.

Commenting to bump this thread.
furthermore ill explain.
In SE1, this was very noticeable in Large Grids for me.
Certain times, I'd paint a room or something, and later notice because it paints the entire block, I'm moved to redo/move entire builds, just because i couldn't paint it, "hazard yellow" without it stick out somewhere, somewhere else.
sure i can just put a few more blocks to cover it up, but with PCU limits, i feel like it would be much easier to less strain to be able to paint individual faces of the block.
Now in SE2, i understand with the current grid system, its much easier to just set another small layer over a large block or something along those lines.
but when doing Super grid, and Large ships, that will easily become PCU heavy, just to paint some blocks.
I'm unsure if that makes sense, But i feel like this would be just a nice QOL feature for painting, with adding the paint gun anyways, i think it would be a good feature to have even if its later on.
