Would it be possible to add a method to transmit power between grids using a microwave power transmitter? It would function just like a laser antenna, and would allow you to link multiple widely space grids. In fact you might be able to combine the laser antenna and power transmitter into one device, although making it a separate blocks would give you a reason to build more stuff which is always a good thing for greebling. You could also think about power broadcasting but that's not as scientifically realistic.
