Armor Blocks.

Light Armor to Heavy Armor

Currently in Space Engineers, Survival Mode, an Engineer must grind down a Light Armor Block (LAB) completely in order to replace it with a Heavy Armor Block (HAB). This of course requires consideration of adjacent blocks as to not cause damage and/or loss of materials.

Upgrade Tool; With materials on hand and tool in hand, Engineers are able to weld the already present LAB and introduce the required materials to build LABs, into HABs. HAB Materials requirements adjusted for what's already present from the LAB. Welding time fitting accordingly.

Going from the established SE1 welding bar on the HUD, the bar could reflect a LAB as a half completed bar but Green reflecting completion. Upgrading could take the welding bar further up, showing as a Light Blue section above the Green.

I really like this idea, and it could create more uses for existing materials without bloating the g menu.

Want windows or armour that can protect against radiation hazards? Upgrade it with lead.

Want lighter armour? upgrade a block with aluminium.

it could be applied like a skin to simplify upgrades or initial building.

The system could mesh really nicely with the progression system, bring wider uses for some of the lesser used materials, create new engineering challenges and even expand the production chain a bit without limiting the for gameplay loop.
