Mobile voxels - Asteroids and/or carving ships

I had a random thought today that I thought would be quite a nifty idea. What if we could incorporate voxels into ship designs? Strap a whole bunch of engines to an asteroid to move it or carve one to look how you like to allow for more interesting/organic ship designs.

I like the idea that asteroids and such could move around, so maybe an asteroid which is rich in resources moves at 60m/s and you have to mine from it while matching its speed. Stuff like that. Being able to stop them would be good too, but towing them will definitely lead to peeps dropping asteroids onto others' bases, which sounds funny but would probably be frustrating.

If I recall that was called Dual Universe, and while it allowed for some truly unique and beautiful ships, it also had people putting fillagree on their fillagree on their greebling until it took so long for constructs/structures to load that you wouldn't know they were there until the game suddenly went "Oh wait, there's supposed to be a thing where your ship currently is parked... I'll just clip the two in to each other and let Klang sort it out."

It was a cool game when it wasn't klanging out (or getting wrecked by metas, or people insiding factions, though neither of those is relevant to the topic here), but I think the 25cm blocks will be a more than adequate level of detail, especially for those of us with slow net-connections that desire not to re-discover the wrath of klang like that again.
