Ropes/Cables and Winches
Now that VS 1 is available to us, I have been revisiting some of my creations in SE1 to bring over to SE2. I mostly stuck to planets after they were released in SE1, and something I spent a lot of time building there, which I can't imagine would be different here, is cranes and I see a lot of cranes being built in other peoples creations. Inevitably, these builds rely on a combination of rotors, hinges and pistons, which was ultimately needlessly complex, and usually unstable but the only real solution.
With SE2, I think we need to resurrect the idea of ropes, cables, winches, and pulleys. This would go a long way in simplifying builds, which helps with stability (I am aware that the physics in SE2 are much improved, but complex systems still invite instability) and sim speed. Having a crane built on to your rover would not be nearly as much of a hassle, and it adds to survival scenarios by giving you access to a low resource cost utility item, that will also be useful in late game.
We saw some version of this in Medieval engineers, so I think it only makes sense to add here. It also adds the possibility of additional functionality, assuming the same level of SE2 collision mechanics, in the form of say tethering loose items to grid. For instance, lets say its early game and you have a rover on a hardcore survival run where resources really matter. Instead of building a magnetic plate, connector, landing block, merge block, ect. you simply lift the salvage on to your rover and strap it directly to the hull. This adds to the survival aspect, but it also adds to immersion.
Imagine you are exploring rough terrain in your rover and you get stuck. Instead of having to painstakingly engineer a way out of it, you can use a winch to pull yourself out, or you could use it as an aid in climbing sheer faces.
Similarly, since we know water will be a thing, and by extension so will boats, a rope or cable will allow us to moor our boats simply, or craft anchors, both of which will be necessary functions. A similar utility item would be hoses. Using rigid armatures makes plenty of sense in some situations, but a hose is even better in most use cases.
Ultimately what I am getting at, is I think some form of loosely tethering blocks together would be a massive QOL feature, as well as help with roleplay and immersion. I would love to hear what other think, how you might improve on my ideas or what you would use these tools for, and let's try to get Keens attention on this long requested feature.
This is a duplicate suggestion but the other one is so devoid of detail I hope they keep this one
