Block damage breaks that block into grid of smaller blocks

I did some testing of large vs. a grid of small blocks and battle damage. I'd like to test this with an actual functional weapon, but taking a large heavy armor block and placing it next to a grid of small heavy armor blocks constructed into a block of the same size, I felt the damage to the small blocks was more realistic and interesting looking.

The suggestion is that if a block of armor is damaged, it auto-decimates into a collection of smaller blocks and damage is appled appropriately to those armor locations. Repairing the block fully would restore it to a single bock again. Some of the small blocks might get knocked off, you might have a pitted. cratered looking section of hull until then, but it might be airtight still.

I would absolutely love this, but I'm not sure if even the new engine could handle the lag that would create. I mean if you have a full "large grid" of 10k blocks, if even only 1k blocks are damaged, that's 125k new small grid blocks that need to replace the 1k large grid lost. Even if half of those are destroyed, that's still changing a 10k block ship into an over 70k block ship. As awesome as that would look, I don't think even VRAGE 3 can handle that yet.

(also a more extreme example, a 40k block titan that's heavily damaged and 10k blocks need to decimate could be up to 1.28 million blocks.)

Maybe if they added a lot more intermediate block sizes that all decimate if needed... it could possibly work? But considering even like 20-30k blocks in a battle really pushed SE1 to it's limits, I'm not sure if this would be possible without extreme lag.

Yeah, agree that this could quickly escalate. I just did some damage testing and visually the grid of smaller blocks was much more interesting looking.
