Linux Dedicated Server Binaries - pls. make it happen :-)
Hello there,
as PurplProto mentioned 15 months ago, most dedicated server hosters, communities and small gaming groups are running Linux servers to host their dedicated game servers. Running server software on Linux is the industry standard and should be an option for the next Space Engineers game.
I just wanted to bump this so it doesn't get forgotten "Linux Dedicated Server Binaries" replies are still being posted here, and I really hope Keen takes this into account during the development of the new multiplayer. The thread is currently marked as "Considered (not Planned)", and I'd love to see that change. Native Linux support would make a huge difference for the hosting community and would bring Space Engineers in line with what's already standard practice for virtually every other multiplayer title out there.
Thanks for considering it!
I like this feedback
Linux is a must need, given the way the market is starting to lean towards Linux use. Its insane that it has only been considered on both the server binaries and the main game running on Linux. OP is right with Linux being the industry standard for servers I mean for peat sake the google summary says it all.
"Linux dominates the server market, powering over 44.8% of general server operating systems in 2024 and over 78% of web-facing servers in 2025 and It runs 100% of the world's top 500 supercomputers"
To say more, almost all source games with multiplayer servers have the ability to run on Linux. To add Linus Tech Tips is doing a Linux only challenge and they are happy with it as their main OS and for gaming. Even France is switching all its government systems over to Linux, I repeat that an entire country is switching to Linux.
Windows is actively pushing users away with their insistent need to advertise and collect user data. With SteamOS coming to the stage with the Steamdeck and the soon to be released Steam Machine it should be at the forefront of things that need to be done given that SteamOS is a distro based on Arch Linux. At this point supporting Linux is a must need unless KSH is actively trying to segregate and gatekeep its player base.

Proper server support would mean I spin up a server pretty much instantly. I can't be arsed to deal with Proton for a headless server.
It's 2026 and Windows is turning into shit. Give us an option we can work with.

its proven that it can work for SE1, the community has proven it will work. Mind you the community does not have access to the source code. This was done purely with Mad Skillz^TM. Imagine what can be done by keen who has access to the source code and build pipelines...

Switched last Year to CachyOS. So even a bigger yes from me now. And more and more switch to Linux, for very good reasons.
But there is a big BUT. If the dedicated Server runs fine under Wine/Proton, that would also be Ok, but then Keen need to make sure it runs fine under that setup. I didn't have really trouble with SE2 under Proton and from my experience so far under CachyOS it could be fine even without a dedicated Linux server, but like I said, Keen should test it then.
Edit: Since the old thread is flagged with "Considered (not Planned)", which translate with they thought already about it and are against it, we shouldn't have high hopes about a native Linux server, but that didn't mean that they can't make sure it runs fine under Wine/Proton.
