Backpack building not working in story mode since classic survival update

Since the new Classic survival update came out the backpack building in the story mode isn't working.
I have tried to build multiple things using ores and backpack building but it just isn't working.
I have tried half light armour blocks, a light and stairs but despite the screen telling me I can use iron ore to build them I have to get the correct components or nothing builds.
I thought the changes had only been made to Classic survival mode and not the story mode yet but I cant even backpack build simple steel plates.
Without having build planner this is a but of a pain and we can only set production to make 100 items at a time and I need a few thousand steel plates to weld up my base so thats a bit of a pain as well.

I have discovered that if I have a full inventory I cant backpack build but if I leave a little space it all works as normal.
