General feedback on the voting system and archiving of feedback

This is feedback about this site and how SE2 feedback is handled. Overall, it's a pretty good system, though the voting system concerns me for bugs and feedback. Archiving increases those concerns.

I have suggestions from months ago that are archived (due to not enough votes I assume), and these fall off the lists, yet similar feedback from others on the same topic come in later on, these also get 'not enough votes' and vanish into the ether. However from what I see, since people don't do a great job often looking for other similar feedback before entering their own, it feels like we're filling this forum up in some cases with gobs of the same feedback that each get 1-3 votes and vanish forever, when the cumulative votes if taken together on said topic would easily pass the criteria of enough votes.

I'd like to suggest that you look into a method to create virtual links between some of these feedback, and perhaps we (the players on the forum) could help police this and help create these cross-links as suggestions back to you. If the admins here agree then the topics could get merged in some form at least for the voting counts. I'd hate to see some good ideas (like some of mine naturally : ) vanish because a weakness in the voting system. A single suggestion with 100 votes isn't much different from 50 people putting in similar ideas and all only get a couple votes.

Archived topics should be recoverable and have a process to be made active again, not sure why feedback from 4 months ago wouldn't be just as valid now, it may take months for some topics to get enough votes, vs. others that get lots right away, both are still equally valid feedback and both should have a chance to earn their votes.

Also observed that the main page here for topics defaults to 'updated' as the option displayed to people who arrive at this forum. Meaning, people who pop in here to check will only see feedback or bugs that have been at least updated or replied to at least once and only then recently. I would suggest the default may be new/updated so its easier for casual forum browsers to also see newly entered suggestions. You may be statistically limiting the rate at which new feedback gets seen and voted on. Maybe it's intentional? <shrug>

yeah i found this to be kinda weird too, new posts should also enjoy the "updated" status

The site has a category system that appears to be unused. If it is possible to search by category then setting a tag/category may be useful when posting.

Yeah, I just see cases of similar feedback, each with their own pool of votes. None identical, but similar enough that it could count as feedback on an underlying game topic. Just trying to pass along any thoughts to help make the follow on to my favorite game as great as possible.

Even when I hit refresh on the topics page, it switches from new/updated to only updated.

Being able to "revive" archived feedback tickets (only once per ticket).

Agree, there should be some method to revive them, especially since once they get archived they fall out of the search here. You could have a bit of feedback that is one vote away from being 'under consideration', and it vanishes and later one someone else drops the same suggestion and it's 'start over'.

Currently the only method I know of to keep feedback from being archived and vanishing is to continue conversations on each thread you care about to re-bump them to the top of the updated list so people can continue to comment, read and vote :)

I really wasn't sure where to post this, but I wanted to say.. Thank God that you added the feature to revert to se1 style steering. I hated the new cursor steering. I have thousands of hours playing se1 and just could not deal with the new steering method. I will have to say, nice job on se2 so far. Future improvements and a fully completed game!

Thanks I’m working through this area right now.

You’re right that similar feedback getting split across multiple posts can dilute visibility, and that useful ideas can end up effectively lost when threads are archived. We’re looking at better ways to group related feedback and improve how older but still relevant topics can resurface or be re-linked to ongoing discussion.

Appreciate you raising it clearly it helps with the direction we’re shaping here.

Thanks Arron, yeah the current half dozen or more reports of backpack building being borked is an example of something described above. Been thinking that you folks having the ability to merge threads, or move a thread discussion into a comment tree (with comments on the merged thread appearing as replies under the topic text which becomes the 'comment). in whatever is considered the 'main' or first thread on the topic. I think the latter case might be the better solution, but debatable if the backend database could support it or how much work that would be.
