Fast Travel points should be buildable similar to how Jump Gates operate in sci fi

With the new FT, Fast Travel, system implementation in the campaign i think it can be expanded to allow for a better long distance game play experience


You should be able to build FT points. They would have to be stations and draw enormous amounts of power. Yet it would allow you to have that power generation on the station and not on your ship like SE1 jump drives


You could also incentivize players to use they systems by making Jump Drives much more expensive to operate than these FT points, huge energy draw that scales with mass, so it is much cheaper to build Ft points between regions than use a jump drive. This would also encourage more specialization in ships, exploration ships would just be a jump drive with enough materials to build a FT point, and make all in one mega ships less popular

With introduction of money, these could be pay-to-travel locations, where destination could be selected from your GPS. Giving an advantage over the FT points. Require regular maintenance from owner.

I must offer an opposing position. space is big, fast travel and low cost jump drives make it small. Both systems create the loading screen effect that has been problematic in Starfield. If SE was an arcade game I could sympathise with your post. I would support systems like jump drives and fast travel if interstellar travel was part of the game. As big as it is, Almagest is a binary solar system, travel across it's territory takes many hours at speed. I do think that rapid travel is necessary by other means, but definitely not instantaneous travel. The time taken to get from A to B creates the sense of the vastness of space, fast travel as is removes any meaning to distance, and diminishes the game experience.

I agree, Deon. I was just expanding on the idea proposed, how it can be made more fun. On the other hand, not everyone can afford to spend hours in a game.

Regarding distances... was it intended to make the planets 100km diameter with atmosphere 10km thick? Not very realistic, but I guess it would take a terrain generator to create surface for area of a realistic planet.

Yeah I would like more purpose in building, rather than just attaching a crafted drive to your ship.

I really like having this be a build with the limitation that it cannot move. Need to fly out for a few hours in a certain direction sure...then build the thing, and be able to get back to other waypoints easily enough. Just as long as you can't move it without complete destruction and rebuild.

Maybe need to make it an oppressive level of power requirement or something like safe zones and chips in order to jump away. Seems rude to have something run out of power and then be unable to jump back. Jump beacon is low power, jump portal generator perhaps high power.
