Please don't release basic updates as DLC like the criminal SE1 tactic

They don't, though. The updates are free - most of the DLCs are just optional blocks and skins that aren't needed for playing. Many of the blocks look really cool, but none of them add functionality. The only DLCs with actual "content" are the ones that include extra scenarios, like Frostbite, and most SE1 players aren't concerned with scenarios anyway.

Personally, I really like SE1's approach to DLCs. I own about half of them because I was attracted to how some blocks looked, but I lose absolutely nothing for not having every single one. Not like, for example, Paradox games, where they introduce cool new mechanics with the free updates, but you can't use them properly without getting the paid DLC that comes out at the same time.

There are some that give minor advantages. Such as the offset spotlight, which fits on a half size block while barely sticking out. I like to use it in a certain build where it lets me put a hinge next to it and the hinge still has most of its movement range.

Or the Survival Kit Type 2, which is presumably airtight at the rear (I have not used it yet). Useful for very small bases where it would be a part of a wall that keeps the air in.

I'd hardly call such minor differences "basic updates" or the paywall behind them "criminal." Both those examples can be worked around with just a tiny bit of creativity. The differences are handy, sure, but in no way revolutionary, and if they do mean a lot to someone then what's wrong with paying a few dollars for them? The DLCs go on sale for 50% off all the time.

Devs have to be paid, and I admire Keen for their commitment to doing so without making DLCs that change the game in any significant way. There are plenty of game companies who would've felt major additions like planets (which required a new game engine to be created) should be paid DLCs. Keen gives us all the new mechanics from each update for free and offers some fun but minor extras for those with the funds and inclination to pay.

Granted, in most cases it is just cosmetic. I just like compact builds, and then it can be annoying if you cannot place that couch in a passage because you already have mounted a light on the ceiling. An inset light (DLC!) fixes that problem. I have all DLCs except the latest one BTW.

Among other reasons, I got SE2 because the unified grid promises to fix that problem. It has its own quirks but as we are still in Alpha, those little problems might be solvable.
