Ore deposit tiers
Just throwing this out there.
Tier 1 deposit: Small and near surface, best mined with Mk1 hand drill and Mk1 ship drill
Tier 2 deposit: Bigger but harder to reach, best mined with Mk2 hand drill and Mk2 ship drill
Tier 3 deposit: Huge, rare and hard to reach, best mined with Mk3 hand drill and Mk3 ship drill
Tier 4 deposit: Practically infinite, real deep and rare, best mined with Mk4 hand drill and Mk4 ship drill
IMPORTANT: Keep these as soft limits, so any drill can mine any deposit! But if you mine a Tier 4 deposit with a Tier1 drill, you wont get much out of it, maybe your drill overheats or something.
The higher tier deposits could appear as random encounters, instead of you having to hunt for them with ore scanners. So someone already discovered it, built a mine, then abandoned it for you to find...

Or not even abandoned mines, but occupied ones, so you have to buy rights to mine at it, or earn the right by performing mission for the mine owner NPC!
They could have slightly different visuals, but best way is just name them uniquely like: "Fe" "Fe2" "Fe3" "Fe4" or such.
It wont be confusing to new players because:
