PlayTest12: SmallGrid Small Hydrogen Tank capacity too high

Patrick Hansen shared this feedback 4 years ago
Completed

Large Grid Large Hydrogen tank provides a capacity of about 11752 L/m3 (L of H2 / Block Vol )

Large Grid Small Hydrogen tank provides a capacity of about 7467 K/m3

All good, makes sense that a small tank is less efficient.

But if we look at the small grid ones:

Small Grid Large Hydrogen tank provides a capacity of about 10240L/m3

Small Grid Small Hydrogen tank provides a capacity of 20000 L/m3

This makes the small grid small tank not only more efficient than the small grid large tank, but also far more efficient than any other means of storing hydrogen.

Judging by the model, and considering how the large grid is balanced, the small grid small tank should be at like 5500-6500L/m3

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

Hello,

Just increase the capacity of the "Large Grid (Large/Small) Hydrogen tank" :-)

That would make the small tank more efficient than the large tank, making the large tank pointless.

The reason we use large containers instead of many small ones in real life, is that large tanks are more efficient.

Hi,

We changed capacity to 7k.

It's better, but it still puts the tank at 14000L/m3, siginificantly more than any other hydrogen tank, which makes using a large tank pointless for anything but aesthetics.I think it's a bad move balance wise. I think it'd be better if the tank was at least made 2x2x2 blocks, instead of the current 2x2x1, that'd bring it's capacity/volume down to 7000L/m3, while still having it be significantly (15.63x) smaller than the large tank.

The small grid small tank comes with a 2x1 compressor that squeezes 1.4x more H2 into the same space. But the compressor adds a lot of weight to the block which balances it out.

if 2x1 of the block is compressor, all gas must be stored in the other 2x1, giving the tank itself a capacity of 28000L/m^3, that's well over 2x, not 1.4x. This is just getting more rediculous in regards to continuity with the other tanks.

Why can't i just add the same 2x1 compressor to a large tank, and have it hold 2.8x the current amount of gas?

Can't be a flow rate thing, unless the small tank is flow-rate limited due to its compressor which i doubt.

In a game where ice provides the energy for its own electrolysis, refining can yield more kg of iron than the original ore weighed and humans can carry metric tons of nuclear fuel in their backpacks, I wouldn't worry much about the compressor flow rate. ;-)

But that's established and somewhat balanced, so that falls under suspension of disbelief.

This is messing with the balance. It'd be like upping the small battery to a capacity where they could store more power than a regular battery at the same volume, or that filling the hole left by a large thruster with small thrusters and getting more thrust.

Basically, it messes with the internal realism, like when Disney decided that you can use a ship entering hyperspace to blow up a fleet in Star Wars. Just irks me !

In my opinion tank should:

  • be 1x3x3
  • have a large conveyor port, allowing this way to refill bottles via conveyor system, thing that, on first release of 1.194 did not work.
