Hydrogen Engine bugs

Victor Zlatarev shared this bug 5 years ago
Need More Information

When there is no output from the Hydrogen Engine it's still showing the pistons moving and the fan is spinning. This is very distracting as you can't easily tell if it's working or not.

Also there seems to be some problem with it's power distribution or something like that. It does seem to be the lowest priority for electricity - if there is any other power source (reactors, batteries, solar panels) on the grid the Hydrogen Engine doesn't output anything at all (more testing shows this doesn't behave the same every time). And if it's the only power source it's output is twitching all the time and doesn't look very stable.

Hello Victor,

thank you for your quick report!

As for the animation issues, it is intended. I will surely let our designers to know about it, I would suggest to create an idea instead of bug report for this.

For the power distribution. Can you be more specific? We already have a ticket, which could possibly address the issue, but if you would be able add steps to reproduce, it would allow us to test it on your case as well.

Thanks once again.

Kind Regards

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply.

There were only two options - Bug or Feedback - so I decided to go with Bug.

As for reproducing the power issue, unfortunately it wasn't consistent throughout my testing. I will try to test some more but it might have to wait until the next public test you do.

This might be on part a problem with batteries. Please check here: https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/publictest/topic/broken-batteries-unlimited-energy

I just tested this, i created a new small grid, i placed 1 hydrogen engine, 1 H2/O2 generator, conveyors to connect them, then i filled the H2/O2 generator with ice, then in order to start the thing i placed a solar panel and when the engine started i removed the solar panel. the engine was producing 1kw of power and the H2/O2 generator was consuming ice as normal. then i placed 10 antennas in order to increase power consumption, the engine was still going (1 kw output, and it was filled between 0L and 10L quickly bouncing back and forth) but the H2/O2 generator was not consuming ice anymore, then i removed 7 antennas to decrease power consumtion, engine output was oscillating quickly between 1 kw and 60 kw, and the H2/O2 generator wasn't consuming ice.

(and btw the antenna signals were blinking)

Thanks TheWarMaster97 for the detailed explanation. My experience was similar but I wasn't sure how to describe it. :)

Have done several controlled tests with Hydrogen Engines now and results are really strange & inconsistent.

1)They can't make up their mind how much they're consuming per second. In my first test I clocked 1L per second for about 4.5 hours run time. In my second test I clocked 10L per second for about 20 minutes of run time. In another test the tank was empty after 2 minutes... this is talking about the exact same vehicle under the exact same conditions.

2)They can't be refilled unless they're also turned on & consuming Hydrogen, which is counter-productive. Need a toggle or something - like the "Stockpile on/off" toggle for Oxygen & Hydrogen tanks.

3)They consume faster than an O2/H2 generator can refil them and seeminly can only be refilled directly from Hydrogen Tanks.

4)Large quantities of Hydrogen in the internal tank occasionally go missing... as in they vanish from the game for no reason. During one of my tests in which I built a Hydrogen powered truck in Survival mode, the truck started out (from newly built) with a full tank of 16,000 litres. I thought this was odd since I'd put no Hydrogen in it but carried on with the test. To begin with I clocked the engine running at idle to be using 10L per second but after about 2 minutes, all the Hydrogen vanished like it'd been bulk-deleted. One minute there was just over 14,000Litres and very literally seconds later the engine stopped & the tank read empty.

I really want to be able to use Hydrogen Engines - in my ground vehicles especially, but right now they're so full of bugs & discrepancies that they just can't be trusted to do their job consistently. Running out of fuel 20km from base due to a bug is not a risk that's worth taking. Makes me feel like shelving Hydrogen Engines until they're fixed & working properly.
